What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a term that is use to describe inflammation of the joints. Arthritis in mild cases, causes pains in the joints, stiffness and if severe loss of movement. It can affect joints in any part of the body. Arthritis is a chronic disease, meaning it would effect individuals over a long period of time. Two common form of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and gout arthritis.
The common risk factors that determine who gets arthritis are:
- Age: Your age determines your risk of developing arthritis. Among 18 years old adults and older, it is a leading cause of physical disability.
- Gender: Study shows arthritis occurs more frequently in women than in men.
- Obesity: Being excessively over-weight increases your chances of getting arthritis, particularly for women. By being over-weight it put pressure on your body’s joints, particularly on your knees. Therefore, it is recommended that you have a balance and healthy diet and reasonable amount of daily exercise. This not only improve your well being, but it can control your weight.
- Work factors: Work-related physical trauma and repetitive injuries can contribute to the development of arthritis. If your job is strenuous and requires you to have repetitive actions of bending, kneeling, or squatting, you are at high risk for developing some sort of arthritis in your knees.
Statistic shows that women are two to three times more likely to suffer from arthritis then men.
